SPOKEN WORD RESIDENCY WITH IBé

Why do you write poetry?

"The need to tell stories...
the need to connect with people...
ways to find answers..."

"Poetry goes beyond the limitations of language."

"Poetry is a way to your truth."

"In poetry, 1+1 can be 5."

SLOW OVER-EASY POEM

HOME

BRIDGE ACROSS ATLANTIC

African in America

The African in America
I live in the middle of the Atlantic
Dying to reach the Pacific
Standing in the middle of sacred waters
Eyes on America
Hands lifting Africa high and mighty
I'm the face of 2 worlds
2 roads to a single manifestation
Somewhere between rockets to the moon
Camels across deserts
Where extreme poverty meets excessive indulgence
Humility, the flip side of flamboyance
I live between ignorance and prejudice
One foot in the past
The other in the future
I am
The present that will forever remain an enigma comprehensible to few.
